This Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) is a Beachmaster. That means he has proven himself to be one of the biggest, strongest and most aggressive bulls. By being the victor in a series of fierce battles with other males, he has won the right to establish a breeding territory on the beach and control a harem of females. His dominance will be challenged many times, so he must constantly be on guard. He will not even leave his territory long enough to eat during breeding season. Many bulls die from their battle wounds.
95% of the world's population of Antarctic fur seals breed on South Georgia Island, located in the South Atlantic Ocean, near Antarctica. This is the densest concentration of marine mammals on earth.
